There are three legs to the stool on which the High Sheriff sits to carry out the duties of the Office:
- upholding the Crown & the Judiciary, including promoting inter-faith and belief relations.
- supporting and promoting the work of the police, probation, prison, emergency, and crime prevention services
- convening and championing the voluntary public and business sectors – focussing on Domestic and Sexual Violence, Violence against Women & Girls (VAWG), and building sustainable communities
I have undertaken duties in all three areas during my first month in the role, I have managed to keep sitting on the stool, although as is outlined below, because of the time of year, with the coincidence of Christian Easter, Muslim Ramadan, and Jewish Passover, I’ve given more time to promoting interfaith and belief relations than I might do in the next month or two.

A recorder was originally a person with legal knowledge appointed by the mayor to ‘record’ the proceedings of their courts and the customs of the city. The Town Council takes this opportunity by hosting the Honorary Recorders Dinner on an annual basis to thank him for his support to the Council and the Town. This is also an opportunity to bring together the Civic and Judicial community, to better understand our roles and responsibilities in serving our community.
